So what is an OLED TV ?
OLED TV's are an emerging technology. They are in the spotlight since Samsung announced the world's first 40" OLED TV.They are TV's which use OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode technology.
What is this OLED?
OLED is an emissive technology with low power consumption which can be made with manufacturing techniques similar to those for LCD screens.
OLED features an organic process called electrophosphorescence which is a common biological phenomenon shown by fireflies and some sea creatures.Only recently could this be synthesized through non-biological means.
The Many Advantages of OLED
OLEDs have several advantages which make them ideal candidates for HDTV. They are much brighter compared to other back-lit technologies and react faster to signal changes than LCD and plasma TVs making them more suited for FMV [full motion video]. Other advantages include lighter weight and higher durability. If a flexible substrate is used, these devices will be nearly immune to shock. They also possess a much wider operating temperature range, making them suited to hostile environments. No backlight or need for additional light ensures lower power consumption.
Another advantage is that displays are easier to produce and can be produced in much larger variety of sizes. OLED provides displays much thinner than current LCD or plasma HDTVs because a rigid substrate is not needed.OLEDs are a lot brighter than LCD as they are emissive devices in addition to being transmissive one's.OLEDs function by producing light, not by blocking it, So they do not have problems when viewed off-axis as do LCD's.
Various Disadvantages of OLED
While OLED is an advanced and near-perfect seeming technology, there are some problems. It's blue LED component has high failure rate and thus restricts OLED system life. Expensive manufacturing processes are another problem, but cost is sure to come down as popularity and production of OLED's increase. It is also easily damaged by water and if the display is not sealed in a waterproof covering, liquids spilled on it could cause malfunction.
So When Do i get my OLED TV ?
So we can say in conclusion that large screen HDTV's which are paper thin, consume little space and look attractive at the same time are very appealing, interesting and utilitarian. Though at the moment, it is uncertain when OLED technology will be common and priced competitively with currently existing technologies. But OLED HDTV's are sure to be all the rage, when they are commonly available. Till then we all will have to wait with bated breath.
